  9. Windows XP Service Pack 2 users

With Windows XP Service Pack 2, Microsoft have introduced a heightened level
of security which may affect how this software runs. You may receive warning
messages alerting you that the program contains active content and/or
    pop-ups.

To ensure that the program runs as intended, it may be necessary to amend
    your Internet Explorer browser settings.

Select Tools > Internet Options and select the Advanced tab. Scroll down to
the Security options and check the box against 'Allow active content to run
in files on 'My Computer'. On restarting the browser, the program should now
function as intended. This setting only makes changes to the way in which
the browser handles files actually installed on your computer hard drive; it
does not affect permissions for files on a network or the Internet.

  10. Inserting links to activities in other Microsoft documents.

It is possible to insert a link into a Word document / PowerPoint
presentation to one of the actual activities. When clicked on, this link
will open the activity up in a new window.

It is very easy to insert the link. First you need to know where the Starter
and plenary activities are installed on the machine. On most it is in the C
drive in the program files. This is the default when the CD is installed.

The following is instructions for PowerPoint, Word is exactly the same:
In a PowerPoint slide have the cursor in the place where you would like the
link and click on 'Insert' then 'Hyperlink'. This will open up a box. You
will need to find the starter or plenary you wish to link to. So click on
'File' where it says 'Browse to' on the right hand side. This will allow you
to look on your computer for the exact starter or plenary.

In the pop up you will need to first go to 'My Computer' Then click on the
'C drive' (or Local Disk it may be called) then go to the 'Program files'
folder. In there you will find a folder called 'Hodder' in there is yet
another folder called 'Hodder Science' and a folder called 'Science A' (or B
or C depending on which CD you wish you use) will be in there.

(When each of the starter and plenary CD is loaded they will add to this
location, so if they have both B and C there will be folders called 'Science
    B' and 'Science C'.)

Open up the folder and you will see a whole list of activities. If you can't
see anything, at the bottom of the pop up you will see a drop down list
entitled 'Type of file' set this to 'All files'.

All the activities are numbered logically, so for instance the starter for
spread 4.5 is 04_5_S or the plenary extension for the same spread would be
    04_5_PX.

Choose the activity you want, click on the icon that looks like an internet
    icon and click on 'OK'

You will come back to the pop up screen. At the top of the screen you will
see a box entitled 'Text to display' This will be filled at the moment with
a very long name, delete this and insert something more appropriate e.g.
    'example' or 'starter'.

Click OK and you are ready. To test it worked, simply play the PowerPoint
show and click on the link!

Remember when you use the PowerPoint or Word document you must be using a
computer that has the starters and plenaries on the computer or else it
won't be able to find it.

  11. Why can’t I see my Teacher’s Notes?

If you are unable to see the Teacher's Notes, firstly check whether they have opened up behind the main activity screen. See point 12 below on switching between programs. You should also ensure the whole program has been installed according to the instructions to ensure the Teacher's Notes were installed.

  12. How do I switch between programs when I am viewing in 800x600?

Once you have the Starter and Plenary program open, you can switch between any programs you have open by holding down the 'alt' key then pressing 'tab' to move between each of the programs. This is useful to switch between the activity and the teacher's notes.

  13. Is this program compatible with Mozilla?

The program will run ok on Mozilla, however there is a problem with the automatic opening in the 800 x 600 resolution. Press F11 to expand the viewing area once open. In other resolutions there should not be a problem.

  14. Flash Player 8 Security enhancement issues

As a result of the changes to the security model applied to local Flash content made by Macromedia in the latest release of Flash Player 8, users may experience problems when navigating with some buttons within this program. Users running the program with Flash Player 6 or 7 installed will be unaffected and the program should run as intended.

If you are running the program with Flash Player 8 installed on your computer, you will need to make adjustments to the Global Security Settings via the Macromedia website.

    Go to www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/settings_manager04.html

Click on the link ‘Global Security Settings Panel’ to access and change the Security settings.
In order to allow links within the installed program to function correctly, set the option to ‘Always allow’. (Alternatively, you could add the location of the installed program to the trusted locations by following the instructions given on the Macromedia website.)
